MISTLETO (Viscum Album)


Other Common Names: Druid’s herb, Golden bough, Holy wood. A perennial, semi-evergreen parasitic plant, growing on the branches of trees. (Most active and effective, one from guava tree)

Plant Parts Used: Leaves and stems.

The active constituents present in the plant are mistletoe lectins I, II and III (glycoprotein); viscotoxin (protein); galacturonan, arabinogalactan (polysaccharides), and alkaloids.

Mistletoe was a sacred plant of the Celtic peoples; the Celts and Gauls called it “all-heal” or “cure-all”.Shakespeare called mistletoe ‘baleful Mistletoe’, a reference to the Nordic mythology when Baldur, the god of peace and beauty, was slain by an arrow made from mistletoe and then brought back to life by the other Nordic gods.

Herbal practitioners have used this herb as a treatment for urinary disorders,  Hiv, heart disease, and other symptoms arising from a weakened or disordered state of the nervous system, lowers blood pressure, promotes good sleep, treats cancer, soothes respiratory distress, prevents diabetes, boosts immune system, calms nervous system, eases menstrual distress, eliminates inflammation, reduces snoring.

PREPARATION: It can be made into a herbal tea. Use 1/2 teaspoons per cup of boiling water and steep for 5-10 minutes. The tea can be taken 2 times per day.
